Chania Wine Tasting

Vineyards in Crete have been cultivated for over 4000 years. The first wine press was found in the region of Vathipetro and was dated at being 3500 years old!

Crete has 10 primary indigenous wine varietals and many more - seven white and three red. The white wines of Crete are perfectly matched to the mainly fish, seafood, vegetable and wild greens based diet of the island based on its’ higher acidity levels.

Vilana is the main varietal and is most often prominent in the house wines. Other indigenous varietals include Thrapsathiri, Malvazia di Candia, Vidiano, Plyto and Moschato Spinas.

Our tour will take you through a flavorful historical labyrinth of wine and food in Crete.  Your guide, Nectarios, is a native of Crete and has been in the wine industry all of his life learning the secrets of the vine and of the wine business from his father who owned the first winery in the old town of Chania. It is difficult to find a man who is more passionate about wine or about Chania in all of Crete which makes him the perfect culinary companion for your Chania Wine Tour.

Your Greek and Cretan wine tour will take place at the Vineria Wine Cellar in a very friendly and comfortable atmosphere and will begin with a brief and easy questionnaire so that your guide Nectarios can understand what each guest is interested in learning about wine.  Four different wines will be tasted based on the specific interests of the Greek which will be deciphered from the questionnaire. These wines can be from local, Greek regional, international varietals or different blends.

Your wine tasting will be accompanied by bread and Cretan rusks, natural spring water and an assortment of local cheeses and smoked Greek meats depending on the wines to be tasted.
Nectarios will also give you a detailed account of the specific characteristics of the Cretan vineyard and of the different regional wines and varietals throughout Greece.
